General:Date of Release: 31st July 1984 (3rd September 1984 for Punch-Out!!)
Model Nr: BX-301 Game-Play:Boxing is what it says in the title. Here you can play the computer or an opponent. You use the controls to punch, sway and return. A game consists of 9 rounds. Punch-Out!! (BX-301) is exactly the same as Boxing (BX-301). The only difference is that it comes in a different rare box. There are also more common carded versions. Game differences:In Game A you play the computer and in Game B you play an opponent. In Game A the computer starts off with 2 energy bars, but increases by one (up to a maximum of 5) every time the player's boxer defeats five competitors. In the two-player game (Game B) a handicap can be set so that both skilled and unskilled players can enjoy the game on equal terms. Trivia:In Game A the highest possible KO's are 99. Cheats and tricks:The left boxer can be handicapped by setting the amount of energy bars (from 2-5). Less bars means weaker boxer. Shortly before the end of the round the scores start to flash. Against the computer (Game A), you can pause the game by pressing the 'PUNCH' button on controller 2. To release pause, press the 'PUNCH' button on controller 1 or wait 4 minutes. Points:Each boxer starts off with 50 stamina points. 1 point is lost when a boxer is punched. 3 points lost when a boxer is forced to take a step backwards. 5 points lost for being knocked down the first time. 6 points lost for being knocked down the second time and 7 points lost for each time boxer is knocked down after that. Misses:Each time the boxer is punched the energy bars reduce by 1. When all bars disappear the boxer is forced to take a step backward. The bars will reset when the boxer is forced to take a step backward or when he gets up off the canvas. Each time the boxer gets up off the canvas, the number of bars reset are reduced by one less the previous number. The reduction stops when the number reaches 2. Only one bar is reset if the stamina points are at 0. A knockdown is recorded when a boxer is driven into a corner on the screen and is punched in rapid succession until all bars disappear. A game is over when a boxer is KO'd or when boxers continue fighting after nine rounds. Without a KO, the boxer with most stamina points wins. If points are still equal, the game ends in a draw. Other notices:If you hold in Game A or Game B key the highest previous score will be displayed. If the unit is left as it is after game is over, time display will appear in about four minutes. A game is interrupted if TIME key or other game keys are depressed during game playing. Pressing ACL switch or removing batteries erases high score from memory.
Issue Differences (click to enlarge pictures)The table will show how to tell the different Issues that were made:
The battery covers seem to have a number on the back, but they seem to vary a lot and I won't even speculate what the difference is.
